Introduction to Maiwand Teaching Hospital

The Maiwand Teaching Hospital has been established and operating in the heart of Kabul city for the past nine decades, since the founding of Kabul Medical Faculty and Aliabad Hospital. It was Initially named "Qala Baqir Khan," later referred to as "Masturat." During the Democratic Republic of Afghanistan, it was renamed "Maiwand" and has undergone various developmental activities, changes, and transformations due to social and political conditions, as well as the displacement caused by war. Maiwand Teaching Hospital was established and constructed in 1937 during the reign of Mohammed Zahir Shah.

Kabul is one of the most populated cities in Afghanistan, with an estimated population of around six million. However, the physical infrastructure of existing hospitals in Kabul was originally designed for a population of approximately one million. Therefore, it is evident that providing healthcare services at this hospital faces significant challenges due to structural limitations and available resources.

Currently, Maiwand Teaching Hospital operates with 250 active beds and serves the public through six departments:

  1. Dermatology and Venereology Department
  2. Pediatric Internal Medicine Department
  3. Pediatric Surgery Department
  4. Plastic Surgery Department
  5. Ear, Nose, and Throat (ENT) Department
  6. Neonatology Department

The hospital employs a total of 353 personnel, including 241 technical staff comprising specialists, trainee doctors, and staff in technical areas such as radiology, pharmacy, laboratory, anesthesia, and nursing, including the chief physician and hospital director. Additionally, there are 112 administrative and service personnel. It is noteworthy that among the professional staff, there are 18 professors and 6 volunteer doctors, making a total of 265 professionals actively engaged in providing services.

The hospital is equipped with three operating rooms. On average, approximately 800 to 1,000 patients are examined and treated daily across various OPD departments. The average income collected per month is around 900 thousand to 1 million Afghanis which is transferred to the government income account.

Research and Studies

Currently, all scientific research and academic articles—both domestic and international—by professors from Kabul University of Medical Sciences (Abu Ali ibn Sina) are conducted within this hospital. This represents one of the key advantages of Maiwand Teaching Hospital.

Specialty Programs

Standardized specialty programs in Dermatology and Venereology, ENT, Plastic Surgery, Pediatric Internal Medicine, Pediatric Surgery, and Neonatology have been established at this hospital. These programs operate within six departments with a curriculum approved by Kabul University of Medical Sciences and the Ministry of Higher Education. Doctors graduating from all universities in Afghanistan can participate in these programs through an open competition to continue their professional and academic training at this institution.

Trainees who have been trained in various department of this hospital are offered as specialist to the society and all of them have been students and benefited from both short and long-term programs at this hospital. Each week, at least one scientific conference is presented by Trainees. Additionally, these programs are systematically monitored and evaluated by Kabul University of Medical Sciences and the Directorate of Medical Education Development. The hospital is committed to enhancing its trainee programs to produce qualified specialists for the community.

▎Organizational Structure

Each department is divided into specific branches according to the hierarchical structure defined by the Independent Administrative Reform and Civil Service Commission. Each branch reports to its designated head, including directors and managers of relevant sections.

The director position in grade 2end, currently led by Dr. Syed Rasool Mengal, who was appointed as the Director of this hospitalbased on the recommendation of the Ministry of Higher Education.
